Establishment
of Diplomatic Relations between the
Commonwealth of The Bahamas and
the Republic of Mozambique
The Permanent Mission of
the Commonwealth of The Bahamas to the United Nations is pleased to
announce that on Wednesday, 7 September 2005, in New York City, H.E. Dr.
Paulette A. Bethel, Ambassador/Permanent Representative of The Bahamas
to the United Nations, signed a Joint Communiqué regarding the
establishment of formal diplomatic relations between the Commonwealth of
The Bahamas and the Republic of Mozambique.
The Joint Communiqué,
which was also signed on behalf of the Government of the Republic of
Mozambique by H.E. Mr. Filipe Chidumo, Ambassador/Permanent
Representative of the Republic of Mozambique to the United Nations,
states that the Government of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas and the
Government of the Republic of Mozambique have established formal
diplomatic relations as of 7 September 2005, in accordance with the
Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, and on the United Nations
Charter and International Law. This
has been done in accordance with the interests and desires of both
nations.
The Republic of Mozambique, with a population of 19.5 million, is
in South-eastern Africa,
bordering the Mozambique Channel, between South Africa and Tanzania.
Almost five centuries as a Portuguese colony came to a close with
independence in 1975. In 1995, Mozambique joined the Commonwealth. It
was the first country to join which has never previously
had links with Britain.
The
Bahamas Government looks forward to closer collaboration with the
Government of the Republic of Mozambique, not only on a bilateral basis,
but also in the United Nations and other multilateral arena.
