United
States Ambassador John Rood today presented checks totaling almost
$50,000 in U.S. official humanitarian disaster relief funds to the
Bahamas Red Cross Society and the Salvation Army to assist in the
recovery from Hurricane Frances.
Said Ambassador Rood, "Organizations like Red Cross and Salvation
Army
are vitally important parts of the ongoing relief efforts. They are
well organized, experienced in dealing with natural disasters, and can
make sure that the right aid gets to the neediest people with a minimum
of duplication of efforts. We hope these funds help them to get more
assistance out into the field where people most need it."
Accepting the U.S. Government donation for The Bahamas Red Cross Society
was Mr. Ed Fitzgerald. Major Raphael Mason was present for the Salvation
Army.
Today's financial contribution is in addition to the supplies and
transportation services already provided to The Bahamas through the
Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance and the United States Coast
Guard. Today's funds were released under the Ambassador's disaster
assistance authority, which he may access in time of emergency.
Those persons interested in making a contribution to aid in the relief
efforts can contact The Bahamas Red Cross Society at 242-323-7370 and
the Salvation Army at 242-393-2745. Embassy personnel to date pledged
over $1000 to the Red Cross.
The Embassy also acknowledges the many private and corporate donors that
have generously participated in the hurricane relief effort.
