Friday 21st October 2005

Ministry of Foreign Affairs

Your Excellency,

The trafficking of illicit drugs through The Bahamas continues to pose a threat to the National Security of both our nations.  This continues to be an issue for The Bahamas, at the center of our anti crime efforts.

The joint interdiction efforts under the Operation Bahamas, Turks and Caicos (OPBAT), remain pivotal to the success we have and continue to achieve against this constant onslaught.  We are particularly pleased with the increased proactive methods employed by our two law enforcement agencies, especially at our Ports of Entry.  The results have been that we have had a significant increase in the apprehensions of those persons entering and exiting The Bahamas with drugs or proceeds from the illicit trade.

This contribution to the fight by the U.S. government of $592,000 will assist in our continuing joint efforts.  I accept this on behalf of the Government of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas.
