St Andrews captures MUNS title

March 28, 2006

St. Andrews High School emerged as the winner of the Model United Nations Session (MUNS) Monday, winning the ninth installment of the annual event, which is sponsored by the Rotary Club of New Providence and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Representing United Arab Emirates, the four -member St Andrews squad beat out 12 other teams to capture the coveted title.

As a grand prize, the St Andrews team will hold the MUNS floating trophy for one year and will be taken on an all expense paid trip to New York in September, to coincide with the Minister of Foreign Affairs’ address during the General Debate of the United Nations General Assembly Regular Session.

The MUNS programme was held at the Radisson Cable Beach Convention Centre and was split into two sessions. During  the morning session, which this year also included an informal discussion on: Economic globalization: A threat to sustainable development or the way forward, students took part in an interactive training session conducted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the mechanics of the United Nations. In this session, students were shown how to develop diplomacy skills, taught the importance of respecting the positions of other states and introduced to the craft of  resolution drafting.

In the afternoon session participating schools presented prepared national statements on behalf of the countries they represented. C.R. Walker High School, which represented Venezuela, finished second in the competition and a combined Long Island High schools team finished third, while representing the United States of America.

Mr. Charles Stuart of Rotary Club of New Providence and Ms. Rhoda Jackson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs were co-coordinators for the 2006 MUNS. Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of Financial Services and Investments, the Hon. Vincent Peet was also on hand for the event, which brought together schools from New Providence, Grand Bahama, Abaco and Long Island.

He said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs viewed the MUNS “as an invaluable programme which serves as a significant source of stimulation for young and vibrant Bahamian minds, transporting them for the moment, from our homeland to the international stage of the United Nations.” Click here for the Minister’s full statement.
