ON HAITI
November
20, 2004
Foreign Minister the Honourable Fred Mitchell is to leave for Barbados
tomorrow, Saturday 20th November to join Dame Billie Miller,
chair, and other members of the CARICOM Council of Foreign Ministers (COFCOR).
The group is gathering in Barbados for a briefing from the Foreign
Minister of Brazil on that country’s latest initiatives in Haiti.
At
a recent special meeting in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, CARICOM Heads of
Government endorsed a programme of action in concert with the countries
of the Rio Group from Latin America of which Brazil is a leading member.
Brazil has recently announced a set of initiatives aimed at a solution
to the deteriorating situation in Haiti.
The
endorsement of the Rio Group's plan of action is a significant step
toward the reengagement and interface with Haiti at all levels.
Minister
Mitchell will be accompanied by Mr. Craig Powell, Assistant Secretary
for International Relations in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the
delegation will return to Nassau on Monday 22nd November.
