
BIOGRAPHY

FUNCTIONS
Frederick Audley Mitchell Jr. was born on 5th
October, 1953 to Mr. Frederick A. Mitchell Sr. and Lilla A. Mitchell
(nee Forde).
He attended public school in Nassau and graduated as
President of the Student Council of St. Augustine’s College in 1970.
In 1974, he obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in English from Antioch
University in Yellow Springs, Ohio, following which he joined the Public
Affairs Division of The Bahamas Information Services as a radio
producer.
In 1977, he served as Director of News and Public Affairs at
the Broadcasting Corporation of The Bahamas (ZNS).
In 1980, he was awarded a Master’s Degree in Public
Administration by the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard
University, and joined the staff of the Office of the Prime Minister.
In 1981, Mr. Mitchell became the editor of ‘The Herald’, the
official newspaper of The Progressive Liberal Party.
In 1986, he earned a Bachelor of Laws Degree at the
University of Buckingham in England and was called to the Bars of
England, Wales and The Bahamas.
Mr. Mitchell is a founding member of both the New Providence
Human Rights Association and The Bahamas Committee on Southern Africa.
He was also a member of the Commonwealth Observer Mission to
South Africa (COMSA) in 1992 and 1993; and was personally thanked by the
legendary Nelson Mandela for his role in the international fight against
apartheid.
Mr. Mitchell served in the Senate of The Bahamas from 1992
to 2002 and for a time, was Chairman of the Senate Select Committee on
Culture.
In the General Election of May 2002, Mr. Mitchell was
elected as the Progressive Liberal Party Member of Parliament for the
historic constituency of Fox Hill; and was subsequently appointed to the
Cabinet of the Government of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas as Minister
with responsibility of Foreign Affairs and the Public Service. Click
