MINISTER MITCHELL TRAVELS TO
WASHINGTON, D.C. AND NEW YORK

The Hon. Fred Mitchell, Minister of Foreign Affairs and the
Public Service will travel to Washington, D. C. on Wednesday, 22nd
September 2004 to attend the Caribbean Heads of Government and Foreign
Ministers Dinner sponsored by the Congressional Caribbean Caucus.
The Congressional Caribbean Caucus comprises a Bi-partisan Group
of Members of the United States House of Representatives.
Some members of the Caribbean Caucus plan to seek United States
assistance for Caribbean countries recently impacted by Hurricanes
Frances and Ivan.
On Thursday, 23rd September 2004, Minister Mitchell
proposes to attend the Inauguration of the new Secretary General of the
Organization of American States (OAS).
He will be accompanied by His Excellency Joshua Sears, The
Bahamas Ambassador to the United States and Permanent Representative to
the OAS and Mr. Marco Rolle, Under Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign
Affairs.
The delegation will then proceed to New York on 24th
September to join The Bahamas Permanent Representative to the United
Nations, Her Excellency Dr. Paulette Bethel at the 59th
Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
Minister Mitchell will address the General Assembly on 30th
September 2004.
This year’s winner of the Seventh Annual Rotary Model United
Nations Sessions (MUNS), students from NGM Major and North Long Island
High Schools comprising Allyn Pratt, Charmaine Pratt, Jamie Watkins and
Kenneth Scott along with their Advisors/Chaperones, Mr. Machon
Cartwright and Ms. Lynn Marcello will also be present for the address.
Developments in Iraq, Sudan, the Middle East, International
Security, Terrorism and the Eradication of Poverty and Hunger will
likely dominate the discussion in the 59th UNGA.
Other issues of importance include: - the Special Session on
Children, the Program of Action for Sustainable Development of Small
Island Developing States (SIDS), the Special Session on HIV/AIDS and the
International Conference for Financing for Development and the Illicit
Trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons.
