STATEMENT BY THE MINISTRY OF FOREIGN
AFFAIRS
ON CLAIMS OF LACK OF CLARITY IN THE KNOWLES CASE
October 9, 2006
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs takes note that there have been a
number of statements in the press attributed to a prosecutor in the
case of Samuel Knowles in the United States that clarification is
required about the charges on which Mr. Knowles has been
extradited.
From the Ministry’s
point of view no further clarification is required. The Government
of the United States was notified on 4th September, 2006,
that the warrant of surrender related only to those charges in the
request of the United States on 16th December 2003.
Under the terms of
the Extradition Treaty between The Bahamas and the United States,
the person extradited can only be charged on those offences for
which he has been extradited.
