HURRICANE JEANNE PASSES OVER NORTHERN
BAHAMAS
Sunday, 26 September
On Saturday, 25 September, 2004, Hurricane Jeanne passed over the
Northern Bahamas, affecting the islands of Abaco and Grand Bahama with
wind speeds of 115 miles per hour, extensive flooding and storm surges
of 8 to 10 feet. Over 2,000 persons took shelter in
Government-designated hurricane shelters on the two islands.
At a Press Conference held by the National Emergency Management
Agency on Saturday, it was announced that a preliminary damage
assessment indicated that there was extensive damage to public
infrastructure such as docks, airports, roads, schools and Government
Administration buildings, as well as widespread damage to many homes in
various communities on the islands. Electricity distribution was
disrupted by the heavy winds and the water distribution systems were
compromised as a result of the flooding.
There has been no report of loss of life.
