Hurricane Frances
September 8th, 2004
On Wednesday, 1st September 2004, Hurricane Frances entered
the waters of The Bahamas affecting Inagua, Mayaguana, Acklins and
Crooked Island with hurricane and tropical force winds of up to 150
miles per hour. Over the next few days, the storm moved progressively
northward and east of the Bahama chain, thus affecting all the islands.
The hardest hit were Grand Bahama, Abaco and San Salvador. Although much
damage was done to public infrastructure and private property,
fortunately, only two lives were lost during the devastation, one in New
Providence and the other in Grand Bahama. By late Sunday night the storm
had finally left the Bahamas for the Florida peninsula.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA),
which is an Inter–Ministerial body resident in the Cabinet Office,
monitored the progress and the impact of the weather system as it moved
through The Bahamas; and is presently overseeing the implementation of
disaster relief assistance to the stricken areas..
NEMA has advised that it has not authorized any
Bahamian, regional or international organization and/or individuals,
other than the Bahamas Red Cross and the Salvation Army, to accept
donations on behalf of the Government of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas
All enquires regarding
donations are to be channeled to:-
