ESTABLISHMENT OF DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS BETWEEN THE COMMONWEALTH OF THE BAHAMAS AND THE REPUBLIC OF SINGAPORE

The Permanent Mission of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas to the United Nations is pleased to announce that on Thursday, 16 December 2004, in New York City, H.E. Ms. Paulette A. Bethel, Ambassador/Permanent Representative of The Bahamas to the United Nations, signed a Joint Communiqué establishing formal diplomatic relations between the Commonwealth of The Bahamas and the Republic of Singapore.
 

The Joint Communiqué, which was also signed on behalf of Singapore by H.E. Mr. K.V. Vanu Gopala Menon,  Ambassador/Permanent Representative of Singapore to the United Nations, states that the Government of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas and the Government of Singapore, desirous of strengthening the existing friendly relations between their governments and peoples; and promoting and intensifying their cooperation, in the political, economic, social and cultural fields in accordance with the principles of international cooperation reflected in the United Nations Charter; have decided to establish diplomatic relations at the Ambassadorial level with effect from 16 December 2004. 

The Bahamas and Singapore have a long history of very close cooperation in organisations such as the United Nations, the Commonwealth, and the International Maritime Organisation (IMO).  The establishment of formal relations with Singapore is a part of the Bahamas Government’s long-term foreign policy of fostering closer partnerships with like-minded countries in all corners of the globe.  The Bahamas looks forward to continued close collaboration with Singapore, not only on a bilateral basis, but also in the United Nations and other multilateral arena.
