The Bahamas’ Position on the US Embargo against Cuba

Foreign Affairs Minister, Fred Mitchell responded briefly today to a call in the Press yesterday by the Cuban Consul General, Mr. Felix Wilson Hernandez, for the international community to support a draft resolution entitled, “Necessity of ending the economic commercial and financial embargo imposed by the United States of America against Cuba”, which Cuba will submit to the United Nations General Assembly.

Mr. Wilson said that Cuba expects the international community to affirm overwhelmingly its condemnation of the US policy .

Minister Mitchell today issued a statement confirming the Bahamas’ intention of supporting the draft resolution.  The Minister stated that this was not a new position on the part of the Bahamas Government as it could be easily verified by the country’s voting record on this issue at the UN, that The Bahamas has held this position for many years.

While the Ministry of Foreign has always supported the ending of the embargo, it has always called for and continues to call for more transparency in Cuba’s systems of government and justice and for a greater degree of democratic pluralism in that Caribbean nation.
