Bahamas elected to Vice-President position of United Nations General Assembly General Committee

The Government of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas is among twenty-one countries of the United Nations membership that were elected by acclamation, to the position of Vice–President of the General Committee of the United Nations General Assembly.

The vice-presidents chosen along geographical lines, consider the provisional agenda and the supplementary list of the General Assembly, consider requests for the inclusion of additional items on the agenda, allocate items to UN committees and submit a report for the approval of the General Assembly.

As a Group, the vice-presidents also assist the President of the General Assembly in drawing up the agenda for plenary meetings, determining the priority of agenda items and coordinating the general conduct of the work of the General Assembly that falls within the President’s competence. It may not decide, however, any political question.

The Vice-presidents are: The Bahamas, Benin, Botswana, China, Cyprus, Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, France, Gambia, Honduras, Iceland, Iraq, Mauritius, Palau, Russian Federation, Sri Lanka, Turkey, Turkmenistan, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, United States of America and Uruguay.

The President of the General Assembly and the Chairs of the six Main Committees of the United Nations General Assembly are also members of the General Committee.
