HIGH COMMISSION OF THE COMMONWEALTH OF THE
BAHAMAS
LONDON
Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between
the Commonwealth of
The Bahamas and Romania
August 8, 2007
The High Commission of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas in London is
pleased to announce that on Wednesday 18th July 2007, in
London, His Excellency Basil O’Brien, High Commissioner to the Court
of St. James’s and Ms. Raduta Matache, Chargé d’affaires, a.i. of
the Embassy of Romania in London signed a Joint Communiqué
establishing formal diplomatic relations between The Bahamas and
Romania.
The Joint Communiqué states that the Government
of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas and the Romania, desirous of
strengthening the relations of friendship and cooperation between
the two countries, have decided to establish diplomatic relations at
the level of Ambassadors with effect from 18th July 2007.
The Governments agreed that their diplomatic relations would be
founded on the principles and norms of the United Nations Charter
and International Law and shall be guided by the provisions of the
Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 18 April 1961.
On signing the Joint Communiqué, High
Commissioner O’Brien and Ms. Matache expressed their confidence that
the formalization of ties between The Bahamas and Romania will lead
to increased cooperation between the two countries, particularly in
the areas of education, tourism and cultural exchanges. It is also
expected that the formalization of relations will further enhance
the traditionally friendly and constructive relations and
cooperation between The Bahamas and Romania in multilateral fora
such as the United Nations, as well within the context of ACP-EU
cooperation.
Following the formal signing of the joint
communiqué, High Commissioner O’Brien and Ms. Matache engaged in
discussions on ways and means to enhance cooperation between The
Bahamas and Romania. It was agreed that both sides should explore
the possibility of Bahamian students being able to take advantage of
educational programmes offered in Romania, particularly in the
fields of medicine and engineering. It was also agreed that the
respective tourism authorities of The Bahamas and Romania in London
could engage in discussions on possible ways to enhance cooperation
in the tourism field.
High Commissioner O’Brien and Ms. Matache also
discussed ways to increase working-level and political contacts
between The Bahamas and Romania, including through regular contacts
between the High Commission and the Embassy in London, future
Ministerial-level contacts in the margins of multilateral meetings
and the possible appointment of Honorary Consuls in each country.
The Bahamas looks forward to this closer
collaboration with the Government of Romania, on a bilateral basis
and in multilateral fora, in the future.
