ADDRESS BY PHILIP MILLER 29 SEPTEMBER,
2004 One of the key principles underlying the
interaction of nation states in the 21st century is
friendship. Diplomatic
relations between states depend on an atmosphere of friendliness in
order to achieve common international goals such as economic prosperity,
global peace and security and cross-cultural dialogue. It can be said, without a doubt, that since
the establishment of diplomatic ties between the People’s Republic of
China and the Commonwealth of The Bahamas, some seven years ago,
relations between the two countries have been developing consistently
and securely on a bed-rock of friendship. This friendship, to date, has been largely at
the political level, where there have been visits of top-ranking Chinese
officials to The Bahamas and reciprocal visits by top-ranking Bahamian
leaders to China; and also, where, in various international fora and
organizations, we have supported the interests of one another.
Further, the two countries, over the past
seven years, have signed ground-breaking accords such as a Maritime
Agreement that has positive implications for the Bahamas International
Ship Registry; and a comprehensive Cultural Agreement, executed just
last month in Beijing, to foster meaningful and productive cultural
exchanges between the two countries. Today, we are witnessing a new dimension in
the interaction of China and The Bahamas.
This is at the social level, which is critical, if there is to be
continuing deepening of the political process; and if there is to be any
lasting and meaningful cultural and economic benefits for both sides.
And I wish to stress the economic benefits because it my firm
belief that strong commercial links can only be established between
people who are friends, people who know and respect and trust one
another. Today, The Bahamas joins a large body of
nations, many of them small, emerging economies, which have all seen fit
to establish Friendship Associations with China to formalize relations
at the non-governmental level and establish the framework for unimpeded
exchanges at all levels. The Government of The Bahamas, and the
Ministry of Foreign Affairs in particular, pledge to support fully the
initiatives of the Bahamas China Friendship Association; and our offices
will be available at all times to assist in whatever way possible. Thank you. |
