MITCHELL APPRISED OF AGREEMENT BETWEEN BPSU AND MINISTRY OF FINANCIAL SERVICES AND INVESTMENTS

December 29, 2005

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Public Service the Hon. Fred Mitchell has been advised that the Bahamas Public Service Union (BPSU) and the Ministry of Financial Services and Investments have reached an agreement on measures that should be taken to mitigate the ill effects experienced by the ministry’s staff and to its operation as a result of a water and sewerage leak at the ministry’s office at the Rodney Bain Building on Shirley and Parliament Streets.

Mr. Mitchell was first made aware of the situation Wednesday morning when he received a call from Bahamas Public Service Union president Mr. John Pinder, informing him, in his capacity as Minister responsible for the public service and public buildings, of the leak. He immediately visited the site, where he was briefed on the events that had transpired.

The Minister was advised that the premises was not fit to carry out the ministry’s work and that the BPSU and the Ministry of Financial Services and Investment had agreed on a way forward. He was advised that the work of the ministry would continue at its offices at the Beaumont Building at # 50 Shirley Street. The Ministry of Financial Services and Investments will issue further information on this matter as the process continues.
